Nothing tastes better than homemade ice cream. The flavor possibilities are endless, and no store bought brands can compare. Follow these simple steps to make your own delicious, homemade ice cream.
1. Gather the Necessary Materials
The first step to making homemade ice cream is to gather the necessary materials. You will need the ice cream ingredients, an ice cream maker, rock salt, and a lot of ice. Ice cream makers are available at most stores, and can cost as little as twenty dollars.
2. Mix the Ingredients
The second step to making homemade ice cream is to select a recipe and mix the ice cream. You can choose to make vanilla ice cream, which is made of half and half, sugar, and vanilla, or you can search your favorite cookbook for the perfect recipe that suits your tastes. Once you have chosen a recipe, follow the instructions and make your ice cream mixture. Some recipes require you to cook the ice cream ingredients on the stove prior to freezing. For these types of recipes, make sure you let the ice cream mixture cool at least to room temperature before pouring it into the ice cream maker. For optimum freezing, chill all of your ingredients in the freezer prior to making your mixture.
3. Layer Ice and Salt
Once you have your ice cream mixture prepared and chilled, pour it into the metal cylinder of the ice cream maker and put the lid on tight. Make sure you fill the metal cylinder all the way to the fill line, otherwise air will be whipped into your ice cream. The next step is to alternate layering the ice and salt around the metal cylinder. Start with the empty ice bucket, and insert the metal cylinder. Around the cylinder, sprinkle some rock salt, and then some ice. Repeat this until the ice fills the container completely. Be careful to not drop any salt into your ice cream mixture.
4. Freeze!
Turn on your ice cream maker and wait about twenty minutes or until the motor stops. As the ice cream freezes, it may help to wrap a towel or a blanket around the entire ice bucket to insulate it and keep the ice from melting as quickly. Also, check the ice level periodically and add more when necessary.
The more often you make homemade ice cream, the better it will taste.
