How to Become a Wrestler

Wrestling is the sport of physical struggle against a contestant. It originated as an ancient art. In the third century BC, wrestling was a popular sport in Ancient Greece. The Romans, too, admired wrestling, and in the Uffizi museum in Florence, Italy, there is a famous ancient sculpture called The Two Wrestlers.

Wrestlers learn how to grapple. They learn how to clinch, throw, and takedown an opponent, and they learn how to do joint locks and execute pins. The aim of a wrestling bout is to gain a superior position, earn higher points, and win.

Find Your Why

If you want to learn how to be a wrestler, the first thing to do is to analyze your reasons. Since it requires dedication and hard work to become successful as a wrestler, you have to be very clear about your desire. If you are merely interested in wrestling because of the status of it, you are doing it for the wrong reason. You will only stick with the regimen of wrestling if you’re interested in physical strength and fitness and because you love the sport. Those who start to learn wrestling with weak motives, soon get disillusioned because of the hardships; and while there is glamour, even wealth, associated with wrestling, only the best enjoy those benefits.

Once you’re clear about your reasons, which should be compelling enough for you to fight past obstacles, then the next step is choosing the right school.

How to Choose a Wrestling School

When looking for a school, how do you decide which one is best for you?

Here is a simple 3-point checklist that will help you to decide on the quality of a school:

1. Do you feel comfortable in the school?

Are you allowed to watch a few training sessions before you enroll? Are you allowed to talk to others in training before you sign up? This is important if you have never done any training before. Schools that rush you into enrollment but give you little room to find out if you like the atmosphere and the training methods are more interested in sales than in providing excellent coaching. Schools that provide an excellent program are proud to let you talk to their students. In fact, they will introduce you to their top students.

2. Do you like the coaching style?

Do the wrestlers treat each other with respect? Does the coach intimidate, rather than inform? Are the students afraid to make mistakes or are they bold and willing to try and new techniques? Unless the coaching is positive and encouraging, you will not make much progress.

3. Can you learn at your own pace?

Does the coaching allow you to grow and develop at your own pace, or is it all about everyone learning the same techniques per session? Those schools that allow you to learn at your own pace and maximize your strengths and work on overcoming your weaknesses are the best.

How to Get Off To a Good Start

When learning how to be a wrestler, you will get off to a good start if you have strong reasons to motivate you throughout your training and if you go to an excellent wrestling school that satisfies the three-point checklist outlined.
